Frequently asked questions

How do you play the game?

For each team table, you have a choice of our dice or playing card based system. Both options provide a tabletop roleplaying game which gives each player the opportunity to step into the shoes of a fictional hero. Escape from the daily grind by leveraging the power of imagination! 1. Choose your character 2. Let your Story Guide lead you to adventure 3. Describe your actions and roleplay 4. Play a card to see if you succeed 5. Complete your goals and mission 6. Win points All table sessions are essentially storytelling games that use a hand of cards or dice as a chance-based method of determining success or failure in the story. The better your character's skills are, and the better the card/dice roll, the better the chances of success. The Story Guide is your lead storyteller who describes to you what your character sees and roleplays all the other, non-player, characters in the world. You can interact with these other characters and your surroundings just as you would in a rpg video game, but through speaking and improvising. Using a human Story Guide instead of a computer script allows for infinitely varied actions, outcomes, and possibilities.

What is the Card Game System?

"Aces and Spades" is the role-playing game system designed by educator and Story Tables co-founder Ashton MacSaylor. It is also the name of on of our theme settings but it can be adapted to fit many themes and stories. The game is optimized for speed and flexibility, telling cooperative stories in a fictional of your choosing. Each player (other than the Story Guide) assumes control of one character in the story. The Aces and Spades system describes these characters using a set of seven attributes. Instead of a using dice as a randomization method, each player holds a hand of cards. When a player wants their character to attempt something risky, they play a card from their hand and compare it to the character's attributes to determine success or failure.

Who are the Story Guides?

Using either of our game systems, Story Guides take you through a unique adventure built around the setting of your choosing. They help the player build a character or offer prebuilt characters for shorter games. Their narration will guide players through different encounters, while roleplaying a multitude of characters, both friends and foes. Current Main Story Guides:
- Ashton MacSaylor: High school english teacher and co-founder of Story Tables. Ashton has been running table top role playing games for over two decades, both professionally and recreationally. He has also published the interactive fiction novel "The Good, the Bad, and the Undead" and several Dungeon Master's Guild modules under the MacSaylor publishing company Sun Sailor Productions. - Callie MacSaylor: The other co-founder of Story Tables, Callie is an artist and professional storyteller with a background in visual development for tv shows, video games, and film. With her husband Ashton, she has provided art and maps for a multitude of rpg adventures. She is also an avid player of TTRPG games.

Assistant Story Guides
There are times when the main Story Guides will need assistance with large numbers of people in a session or group. In these events, Ashton and Callie recruit other talented storytellers, actors, and gamers who are versed in the Story Tables game systems. Rest assured that all Assistant Story Guides are chosen with care in order for Story Tables to bring you the best experience possible.

What is the Dice Based System?

"Isles of Mist" is the role-playing game system designed by educator and Story Tables co-founder Ashton MacSaylor. Though it was originally designed to function in the "Isles of Mist" world, it can be adapted to fit many themes and stories. Each player (other than the Story Guide) assumes control of one character in the story, each with it's own unique strengths and special abilities. Strength in any given skill is determined by the kind of dice assigned to the skill. The higher number of sides on the dice, the better the chance of success. When a player wants their character to attempt something risky, they roll a dice and the story guide describes the outcome or invites the player to describe the outcome based on the result. If the game is online, we use a online dice simulator.
